Effective Pigeon Control Methods

Carrier pigeons

Pigeons can be spotted on walkways and rooftops.    Although pigeons are harmless creatures, they can cause a considerable amount of damage to the property.

Pigeon droppings have a high concentration of uric acid that can cause discoloration of paints and erosion of metals. Many pathogens such as bacteria, fungi and parasites thrive in pigeon droppings. These pathogens are responsible for transmitting many types of contagious diseases such as Avian flu, Encephalitis, Cryptococcosis and Histoplasmosis. Therefore, it is essential to know how to get rid of birds to avoid falling pray to these diseases.

Based on the size and location of the area, a person can choose an appropriate pigeon control method.

Pigeon spikes:

Bird spikes are the devices designed to keep birds from perching on the edges, parapets, pipes, beams, cutouts and ledges of building structures. They are easy to install and are available in different shapes and sizes.

Pigeon spikes are one of the most effective tools used as a pigeon control measure. They are usually made from metals such as tin, alloy, aluminium, or clear acrylic composite plastics. The overall effectiveness of pigeon spikes is questionable, as pigeons often collect debris such as pine needles and drop them over the spikes to make nests.

Bird nets:

Bird net can be used as an effective pigeon control tool. Nets are generally useful in covering large areas having a proper infrastructure to secure thenets with hooks and screws.

They are ideal for areas such as patio covers, rooftops and courtyards. A properly installed net can act as an impenetrable barrier against pigeons. The major disadvantage of pigeon nets is that they are costlier than bird spikes and are difficult to install.

Electric bird wires:

Electric bird wires are designed to give mild shock to birds when they step on the line.

The current inside the wires is of a low intensity and is meant just to frighten the birds and not kill them. The only disadvantage of this pigeon control measure is, they do not work in case of rain or snowfall.

Birdcage traps:

These cages have door built of wire rebar and consist of a dispenser in which bird food such as grains and seeds are placed. These cages are normally placed on gas station canopies and rooftops and are very cost-effective. Birdcages are relatively ineffective, as they can catch only 20% of the pigeons that are around.

Thus, a properly devised plan can be very effective in getting rid of pigeons.
